Online Marketing has many names; Search Engine Marketing, SEM (which is the abbreviation), Pay Per Click, Internet Marketing, etc.. We could go on for a while with all the names that have been given to marketing your business online. They all do the same thing, however, and that is to drive traffic to your website. Search engines are a huge part of making that happen.
Search engines are responsible for making sure that you get the answers to the terms that you put into a search bar. That?s why it?s so important to make sure that your website pages are optimized for search engines. The way it works is that search engines go out and read your website, which they call ?crawling?, and based on what they see will try to match your web page to what someone puts into a search bar.
Increasing Traffic
You can increase your online exposure, aka traffic, by making sure that you get into your target market?s head. Once you know what your typical customer looks for, you can come up with all of the terms or what we call keywords they would likely use to find the websites that have the information they are looking for.
There are two ways to come up in the search engine results for a term that someone puts in and they are called organic and paid listings. If you come up in the listings naturally, it is called an organic placement. With all of the competition online, though, it can be quite difficult to come up in a listing organically. Another way to rise to the top is to pay for it. This technique is often called pay-per-click advertising or PPC.
Online Advertising
Internet based ads or pay per click advertisements are typically the top three or four listings in the center of the results page and along the right hand side. Often the only way that you will know that they are Internet based ads is by the light background color or at the very top it may have something like ?Ads? or ?Sponsored Links? or something along those lines.
Your online visibility will always be based on how well your web page fulfills the information that a visitor is seeking but how close to the top you are will be based in part on how many competitors there are with the same information, how long the website has been on the web, and how popular the site is.
When it comes to web marketing, optimizing your website will help with both organic and paid listing that appear in the search engine results. In the early days of a website, online marketers often will use PPC advertising to get traffic quickly. Once the website has been around for more than a minute, they will often back off of the online ads and relies solely on organic traffic.
